In China, high school counsellors play an important role in guiding students through their overseas education decision-making process, including long-term and short-term courses. These counsellors are the front-line representatives for UK education, supporting the recruitment of quality Chinese students and they are closely in touch with market sentiments.

Counsellor’s workshop

In response to the increasing number of students from China considering applying for UK higher education institutions, the British Council provides regular professional development training opportunities for high school counsellors in China. The school counseller workshops, an integral initiative of Study UK by the British Council, consistently garner positive feedback. These workshops provide accurate and up-to-date information/resources to support the counsellors in developing their knowledge of UK education and building their capacity to support the prospective students and parents. It is also a good opportunity to connect UK HEIs and education counsellors in China closely as well as enhancing the impact of UK education in China’s B2B market. 

Quick facts and audience

In 2023, a total of 670 participants attended the face-to-face workshop, which were the first physical event after COVID-19.  Four sessions were held in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Chengdu exclusviely for school counsellors. Registrations were not limited to just these four cities; they also encompassed neighboring cities such as Tianjin, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Nanchang, Qingdao, and Xi’an.  They were included among the top 15 cities prioritized in the British Council's strategic development for the education sector, which was supported by the statistical data regarding overseas student enrollment.

Counsellors workshop often follows an interactive way of information sharing, panel discussion and feedbacks from counsellors. British Council provides the summary of the overall year information and upcoming plan for next year. Counsellors can obtain the latest information on the quality of education in the UK, Study UK marketing trend, student satisfaction. UK universities representatives also share the tips of UG application. In this year, we organized an event about Scottish Education before the St. Andrews Day.
