British Council China education market update evening - further your understanding of the China market.

In order to address the latest developments in China’s education market, analyse recent government policy and offer insights into developing a comprehensive marketing strategy, the British Council China hosts spring and autumn market update evenings each year. This year’s autumn update will take place in Beijing on Friday 19 October 2018. The session will coincide with the China Education Expo.

The British Council will provide a market update and external speakers will be invited to share their professional advice on two important areas of China’s education market: the growth of private education and employability of Chinese graduates.

The growth of private education

The most recent statistics from China's Ministry of Education show that private education continued to expand in 2017, with student numbers increasing at all levels. In most cases the rate of increase was substantially faster than growth in the public education system, showing increasing demand for private education.

The strongest growth in private education was at the high school level (typically ages 15-18). Student numbers at private academic high schools grew by almost 10 per cent in 2017, compared to a 2 per cent drop in the public sector.

This presentation will explore reasons behind this growth, what this growth may mean for UK institutions and best practice for working with Chinese private institutions.

Chinese graduate employability

The Chinese study-abroad agent EIC recently released a report on studying in the UK. The report surveyed recent Chinese graduates on a number of areas, including the type of additional support students wish to receive. Over half of the students said they needed support related to employment, more than twice the number who said they wanted academic support.

Within this category, the top request was for help arranging or suggesting internship opportunities, followed by interview training, career planning and support with writing a CV. The strong demand for employment-related support suggests that there is room for UK institutions to do more for their Chinese students in this area.

This presentation will look into the job market for returning Chinese graduates, explore their strengths and weaknesses and suggest how UK institutions could better support Chinese graduates. Chinese graduates will be invited to share their thoughts and experience too.
