Sri Lanka: Education modernisation project funded by the World Bank begins

The World Bank has agreed to provide USD 100 million on a concessionary credit facility for the project to strengthen and modernise both primary and secondary education systems in the country. The project will be implemented during 2018 – 2024.

The development objective of the ‘General Education Modernization Project for Sri Lanka’ is to enhance quality and strengthen stewardship of the general education system. This project has three components.

1) Enhancing Quality and Strengthening Stewardship of Primary and Secondary Education which aims to support the implementation of activities aimed at enhancing quality and strengthening stewardship of primary and secondary education.

2) Project Operations and Technical Support which aims to provide traditional input-based financing to assist the Ministry of Education (MoE) to coordinate implement and monitor the General Education Modernization (GEM) Project component through operational and technical assistance (TA).

3) Contingent Emergency Response which aims to allow for rapid reallocation of project proceeds in the event of a natural or man-made disaster or crisis that has caused or is likely to imminently cause a major adverse economic and or social impact.

The project is expected to contribute to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2020 and Vision 2025 goals to build a strong Sri Lanka through education.
