There are a total of 13 Pakistan universities which feature in this year’s top global universities rankings with an addition of two more over previous year.  The new entrants in the 2023 round are Peshawar University and International Islamic University. 

Three Pakistani universities have been consistently at the top of the country’s list each year and their overall scores are improving year on year.  They are National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Quaid-i-Azam University and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

With regards to the citations per faculty indicator, which measures research quality through a citation per faculty metric, Quaid-i-Azam University scores 95.8 out of 100 and secures 41^st position.

Positive trend is observed through new additions and improvement in scores of the Pakistani universities each year.  This is largely due to the promotion of academic excellence and research culture within universities and through the support from the provincial government.

Until 2019, universities that were ranked in the QS world university rankings used to be from Lahore and Islamabad but that is now changing.  There are universities featuring from other parts of the country implying that quality and high standards are expanding to a wider geography.  With the increasing aspirations of young Pakistani students to access quality education and search for alternate options including studying overseas, it is no doubt going to drive more competition for the universities at home and would stimulate changes to fulfil the growing demand of students for quality education.
