Initiative by UGC to bring in the massive open online course centres (MOOCs)

As a part of its progressive thinking and approach, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is planning to gradually phase out distance learning education centres to make way for courses delivered via MOOCs.

This initiative will be backed by several innovative programmes and the National Information Education Communication Technology will roll out these online programmes. Community Colleges in India will increase its interaction with students through MOOCs so Indian youth feel confident about employment opportunities.

In other news, the Vice Chancellor of the UGC recently announced 35 universities in the country had already applied for excellence status. Interestingly any institution that obtains the recognition of centre of excellence is eligible to receive Rs. 150 crore for development. Additionally in order to enhance the quality of teaching across all institutions, the VC of UGC announced performance based recruitment and incentives instead of permanent faculty positions.
