Covid 19 key updates for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka –

India

Currently, India has an average of 41,900 daily new cases. At present there are 392,864 active cases in the country. Kerala and Maharashtra have the highest number of cases and accounts for 74% of total cases. There is speculation about a third wave but with lower impact in comparison to the second surge.

Nearly 50% of eligible population has taken at least first dose of vaccination and 17% are fully vaccinated.

Education

Many states like Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana have opened schools and colleges with limited capacity and covid protocols from 1 September.

Travel

India has currently air-bubble pacts with around 28 countries including the US, the UK, the UAE, Kenya, Bhutan and France.

Indian government has increased weekly flight cap for UK carriers from 15 to 34. Post this announcement British airways has increased their weekly flight from 10 to 20. The flights are scheduled from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad to London, Heathrow since 16 August. Virgin Atlantic has restarted its daily New Delhi and Mumbai.

Pakistan

The average number of cases reported daily stands around 3,500 across the country. Over 21% of the population has received first dose and 9% of the population has now been fully vaccinated.

The Federal Government of Pakistan introduced measures to contain the rising Covid cases in the hospitals. Inter-city transportation among districts with high spread of coronavirus cases has been shut, and all kinds of indoor and outdoor functions has been banned.

Education

The Government has announced smart lockdowns in 24 districts across the country and all public and private schools will remain closed from 6-11 September.

Travel

Travellers from certain countries listed in Category C, are barred from entering the country. However, it has removed 11 countries from C category including India recently. International passengers arriving in the country are required to undergo health screening at the airport and they must provide negative Covid-19 RT-PCR test conducted within 72 hours prior to commencement of travel to Pakistan. Pakistan is still on the UK’s travel red list.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has 36,830 active covid cases with an average daily new case of 3,000. 11.5% population has taken at least 1st dose of vaccination and 5.2% are fully vaccinated.

Though the country is out of lockdown since 11th of August and shops, malls, offices are open, the government has put some protocols such as transporters can only operate 50 per cent of their vehicles, hotels and restaurants are allowed to open at half their capacity etc.

Education

All educational institutions are closed in Bangladesh till 11 September. Institutions except universities are expected to reopen from 12 September in phased manner.

International commercial passenger flights are operating with restrictions.

Nepal

There are 31,250 active covid cases with an average daily new case of 1,436 in Nepal. 17% population has been fully vaccinated.

The government uplifted lockdown on 1 September which was imposed in the month of April to check second wave of the pandemic. Smart lockdown will be enforced which allows local administration to impose restrictions at different areas depending on the situation.

Education

Schools are not allowed to operate with student’s physical presence, but local government can allow reopening of schools in coordination with District COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre if there is a need for reopening of schools.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka currently has 69,120 active cases while 3,182 new cases have been reported.  59% of the population has been vaccinated with at least 1st dose and 42.5% are fully vaccinated so far. 

The current lockdown in place has been extended until 13 September.

Education

Schools, universities, and private education institutions are still closed indefinitely, and classes are being conducted virtually.
