Competitor Analysis: Where the UK Stands in the Hong Kong Market

The UK has moved well ahead of its competitors in the market for Hong Kong students over the last five years, with market share for higher education amongst English-speaking destinations increasing from 33 per cent in 2006-07 to an estimated 41 per cent in 2010-11, based on official data from UK, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. UK is believed to enjoy an even greater market lead for the schools sector, although comparable data is not available for some key markets, such as US and Canada.

This is one of the key findings in a competitor analysis for the country partnership, completed in February 2012. It also shows UK is better positioned than its competitors to take advantage of the double cohort year, and best prepared for the New Academic Structure.

However, the report indicates increasing interest in alternative destinations in both East Asia and Europe. The US is particularly active in forging partnerships with Hong Kong universities, including through a US$1 million Fulbright scheme to support the development of the four-year undergraduate curriculum in Hong Kong. The UK cannot afford to be complacent.
