China increases scholarships for international students studying in China

22 January 2015

On 21st January, the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education issued a circular announcing an increase in the value of scholarships for international students studying in China. Scholarships of up to RMB66,200 per student per year are now available at the bachelor level, with up to RMB79,200 per year for Masters students and RMB99,800 per year for doctoral students.

Analysis by Liu Jing, Assistant Director Education Marketing

Encouraging overseas students to study in China is by an important priority for Chinese authorities and institutions, who are willing to invest heavily to achieve the set target. UK institutions could address and leverage this by encouraging more British students to come to China for study and internship opportunities and by actively getting involved in various national and provincial “Study in China” projects and programs. In return this would help raise the profile and credit of UK institutions with Chinese authorities and institutions, which could boost recruitment to the UK in the long run. In addition, there might be opportunities for UK awarding/accreditation bodies for certain industries. To attract more international students, local institutions may need more international recognition from international accreditation bodies for their academic departments, and courses and might need apply for accreditation to relevant accreditation bodies.
